Computer Battlegames
Published in Paperback by E D C Publications (January, 1983)
Author: Daniel and Tyler, Jenny Isaamam
Average review score:

Essential for people with z80's
What do you mean that the z80 disappeared before you were born? I was weaned on 8088's and z9\80's. Anyway this is an easy to follow basic (by the line numbers.) book. Let's see if you can convert it to C? Or pick your platform. This is a hardback book from a time of paperback books. The contents show 47 games. Most of them are different versions of Missile for various hardware platforms. Good for it's time. Fun for this time.

A Concise History of the Mormon Battalion in the Mexican War, 1846-1847 (A Rio Grande Classic)
Published in Hardcover by Rio Grande Pr Inc (October, 1984)
Author: Daniel Tyler
Average review score:

A "must read" for anyone interested in first person accounts
Daniel Tyler was a dedicated member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He participated in many of the "critical" events of that Church from it's beginnings. His first person account of the march of the Mormon Battalion is a day by day account of the "longest recorded march in military history." A lengthy introductory by John Taylor, president of the Church, a poem by Eliza R. Snow and a recount of the First General Festival of the Battalion with speeches by Brigham Young and others, makes this a very readable and valuable addition to any history library. Scholars will find numerous mistakes in roosters and some facts. But this is to be expected from someone who didn't have access to anything but diaries and other somewhat less reliable resources. It is a biased account. He was as I have said; a dedicated member of the Church. He most definitely give his views on various people and events. But that is what makes this such a good read. It's not a watered down politically correct account. It was writted by someone who was there. I recommend it without reservation.

Great Book for Executive Directors
WOW, This is a wonderful book that lays out how a non-profit board should work. Creating Caring & Capable Boards delivers a simple outline for preparing a board for leadership and evaluating an organization through out its lifetime. It has helped me (an executive director of a non-profit) objectify my board's behavior and develop a strategy for dealing with them. I plan to order 9 copies and send it to each member.

From the back...
Tucker Mallory wasn't looking for miracles when he returned to his hometown after six years, just a chance to get to know his son. And maybe, just maybe, a chance to make up for some of the damage he'd done when he walked away from his marriage without a backward glance...
Rebecca Harwell Mallory knew she couldn't deny her child the chance to have a father for the first time in his young life. And everything about Tucker seemed to have changed somehow-everything, that is, except the devastating effect he had always had on her.
But how could she trust her son's happiness-or her own fragile heart again-to this man who'd hurt her so many years ago?

In my Opinion...
Tucker grew up with parents that used him. His parents hated each other and were always fighting while they were married. After the divorce they were constantly battling to outdo each other and they put Tucker in the middle. So, when Tucker's marriage fell apart he thought that the best thing he could do was make a clean break from his ex-wife and son. Tucker loved them, but he was sure that his wife, Rebecca, was in love with her highschool sweetheart Brian. Tucker was sure that Brian would be a better father to Sammy. Six years later Tucker gets a picture in the mail of a very sad Sammy at his birthday party. Tucker is now having doubts about leaving them six years ago. He decides that it is time to return home and find out what is wrong with his little boy and try to be a part of his life. Tucker's return changes a lot of lives. Rebecca breaks off her six year engagement to Brian. Sammy now has a father, but is afraid that Tucker will not stick around. Rebecca and Tucker realize that the old feelings they had for each other have never gone away. They need to put the past behind them and deal with the present if they want to have a future. This is a good story that involves family, forgiveness, friendship, and love. I really enjoy this book and look forward to reading Brian's story in 'Not His Wife'.

Deep-Sea Biology : A Natural History of Organisms at the Deep-Sea Floor
Published in Paperback by Cambridge University Press (January, 1993)
Authors: John D. Gage and Paul A. Tyler
Average review score:

An excellent overview of deep sea biology
An excellent overview of deep sea biology for the biologist (not a good book for people without a scientific background). Some of the material is a little dated, but the information for the most part is very good.

The best of the current crop of VXML books.
This is more than just another VoiceXML book. It goes into all the elements and architecture needed to get started developing phone web applications. I've bought 3 books so far and sent two of them to partners working with me on getting a phone web server online. Covers Voice XML Gateways, two different grammar formats, AVR Software, TTS, dialog design, even a chapter on XSLT, plus tons of VXML code examples. Highly recommended!

Eldridge Bagley: Son of the Soil, Soul of an Artist
Published in Hardcover by University Press of Virginia (January, 1998)
Authors: Eldridge Bagley and Susan Tyler Hitchcock
Average review score:

Bagley's beautifully rendered art of historic Virginia.
SON OF THE SOIL, SOUL OF AN ARTIST, is 100 pages of nostalgic art recalling a Southern Virginia that remains fixed in the minds of those who lived it, continues to influence the present, and will flavor the Southern way of life well beyond the Millenium. The pictures of self-taught artist Eldridge Bagley are beautifully reproduced on pages large enough to capture the details of the original oils. Each picture is accompanied by Eldridge's personal comments, peceded by a brief biography of the artist. Whether your interests lie in twentieth-century history, art, Virginia, or Eldridge Bagley himself, this book is a must-have!
